BrumLETS: About

Welcome to Brum LETS = Birmingham Local Exchange Trading Scheme.
We are
a non-profit network whose purpose is to support people (and organisations) to help each other.

History of BrumLETS:
We originally began way back in the eighties as two separate organisations North and South Birmingham LETS, which combined in March 2005, still using paper-based methods. We went online in 2010 with the support of LETSlink, but with key people no longer able to continue, and challenges with digial access amongst some of our remaining organisers, we became inactive. However, having survived the pandemic, and with new members joining, we are rebuilding the organisation to serve as a support network for like-minded individuals wanting to pursue innovative projects across the West Midlands.

How BrumLETS works:
Technically, Brumlets uses a system of Mutual Credit, whereby all members have an Account and may credit each other for goods and services received using our own community currency called "Hearts" (Birmingham being the "Heart of England"). All accounts, including a central system account and other special accounts, balance to zero, so the system is self-contained. You can get work done even if you're short of cash, and you can use your skills to support your community. Using the online system, members can log in and advertise their Offers & Wants and either pay or invoice each other where appropriate in "Hearts".

The BrumLETS Community:
We have a Core Group of members, who are voted in at the AGM to help organise the social and technical aspects of running the system, and also to outreach and network with other organisations. As we have a wide catchment area, members are also encouraged to host local socials. Members are encouraged to keep their own profile up to date, and to assist others, using a "buddy" system, who have problems with digital access eg by helping them update their profiles and/or printing out website pages for them, so they can contact other members and see what events are coming up.
